Facing Winter Weather With Ease
Winter weather can be quite treacherous and there are several steps that you can take to become better prepared for it. Ice and snow can make life more difficult and care should be taken when driving in these conditions. Elderly people need to take special measures to avoid falling and injuring themselves. Winter can be a long season and you will be much better off if you have prepared for it.
It is important to have a reliable heating system. Many people have a secondary system to use in the case of an emergency. Some people choose home space heaters because they allow them to heat an individual room instead of the entire house. This may also save some money in the long run.
Outdoor supplies such as salt for icy sidewalks and shovels to get rid of the snow are critical to purchase before the winter weather strikes. If you wait too long to buy these items, they may be out of stock due to the high demand of snow supplies. You should also make sure that your tires are in good shape and purchase chains for them if necessary. This will allow you to get better traction when driving on snowy roads.
Sometimes power outages occur in the winter due to heavy snow on power lines. For this reason, you should always keep an emergency supply of food and water in case you need it. Pipes can also freeze in sub zero temperatures and you should always keep a supply of water on hand. It is also a smart idea to keep a supply of batteries, candles, blankets, and warm clothing for use in case of outages.
Many of those who have reached retirement age try to stay indoors as much as possible to avoid a fall on slick sidewalks. If you must be outside, try and wear shoes that have traction. This will keep you from taking a tumble on the ice.
It is very important to think ahead and keep your medicine cabinet full of over the counter medications that may be needed for the long winter months. This can include fever reducers, arthritis remedies, and flu medications. People tend to be sick more in the winter because they are in confined spaces. It is always best to be prepared for anything.
There are many things that you can do to make the winter months bearable and it is always best to be prepared before the weather turns bad. Winter can be a beautiful season and should be enjoyed when at all possible. Some people decide to retire in warmer climates to escape the perils of a true winter.
Why do slick tyres stop a car faster than treaded tyres in dry weather?
I recently ran a simulation looking into tyre treads and how they aid in stopping a car, and I found that slick tyres actually stop a car faster (in dry weather conditions and a bitumen road) than treaded tyres, and I was wondering...why? Does it have stuff to do with friction, and why do treaded tyres stop a car faster in wet weather and so on?
The slick tire offers more rubber in contact with road, when brakes are applied more friction between the rubber and the road slows the car faster.
