Creativity Can Break Your Boredom
Many people have a problem with keeping boredom away. And this is true, in spite of the fact that technology has brought us much more things to do in the way of entertainment. Never has there been so many things at our fingertips to enjoy and keep us busy. Yet we still get bored very easily and tired of things quickly. Our attention spans are shorter, and our appreciation for entertainment has dulled.
Being bored while still having the options to do things is bad enough. But being bored when those options have been taken away, is a whole deeper level of boredom. Because it now has a panic factor involved. You can not do something, even if you wanted, because it is simply not there. I suffered from this panic when I rented a new apartment, and left my parents house.
I made the move a bit quicker than I intended, and that meant only being able to take a few things with me. The rest would have to be delivered by my brother, because he had a truck. But he could not do it for another four days. So I was left in the apartment, on my own, with only some things my parents had given me, and some things I owned. I had managed to bring my prize possession, which was an Ibanez acoustic electric guitar.
I played around on it until it was boring, then put it down. I was soon staring at the walls, wondering what I could do. I did not want to go out and be talking with strangers since this was a new neighborhood for me. But I did remember I had my paint set in a box in the back room. So I spent some time drawing and painting, and soon my passion for that faded as well.
I could not think of any ways of amusing myself. Then it hit me. I actually had a creative idea. I grabbed the paint and went to a bathroom mirror. I began to artistically paint a hard rock face onto mine. I was about to create for myself, a fantasy I had, of being a rock and roll heavy metal star. After painting my face, I pulled on my old brown boots, and went back to the living room. I looked like I belonged on a heavy metal album cover.
My fantasy was underway. I went back to the living room, picked up my guitar, and slid the dyson all floors vacuum my mother gave me over in front of the only chair I had. I propped my feet up on the vacuum, began wailing away on my guitar, and pretended I was live in concert. I was lost in a pool of creativity for hours.
My brother made it four days later, and by that time, I had put together five fantastic new songs that ended up being big hits when I played them for my friends. I had discovered something during that time about being creative, and taking advantage of time alone by exploring that creativity. I accomplished more in those few days than I had in months and months when I had all that entertainment at my fingertips. And I was now the entertainment for other people through my songs.
