Siri Not Coming to Older IPhones, Apple Says (Mobiledia)
Apple will not make Siri available on older devices, instead keeping the
voice-activated assistant exclusive to the iPhone 4S in hope of maintaining a
competitive edge.
Online rumors circulated last weekend concerning the Cupertino, Calif.-based
company's possible plan to offer Siri for the iPhone 4 or other iOS devices.
But, according to a Wednesday report from Apple, those rumors are unfounded.
"Siri only works on iPhone 4S and we currently have no plans to support older
devices," according to a statement from the device maker's engineering
department.
The company dropped the price of older iPhone models when Apple released the
iPhone 4S, offering the iPhone 4 for $100 and the two-year-old 3GS for free.
Previous generation iPhones are still selling well, but if users were hoping
to sweeten the deal on an older iPhone by adding Siri voice recognition
software, they are out of luck.
Siri was the feature that made headlines after the 4S debuted in early
October. The software uses patented "artificial intelligence" voice search to
perform tasks such as giving weather forecasts, recommending nearby
restaurants and reading text messages. The software's personality has also
been the subject of much commentary on its sense of humor ...
